Services:

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 11 AM at the Ruggiero Funeral Home, LLC, www.ruggierofuneralhome.com, 126 E. Pennsylvania Avenue, Pen Argyl, with the Rev. Ruth Ann Christopher officiating.  There will be a viewing beginning at 9:30 AM until time of services at the funeral home.  Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl.

Memorials:

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to either Faith United Presbyterian Church, 218 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072 or the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, 1165 Island Park Road, Easton, PA 18042.

 


Willis B. Brown

Wilis B Brown, 95, a lifelong resident of Pen Argyl, passed away, Monday, March 12, 2018, at St. Luke’s University Hospital, Fountain Hill.  He was the husband of the late Anna (Kern) Brown, they were married for 57 years prior to her passing on June 22, 1998.Born in Pen Argyl, August 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Estella (Bray) Brown. After graduating from Pen Argyl High School in 1940, Willis was initially employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company in the research laboratory and attended Churchman’s Business College in Easton.  He later received in BS in Education from East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College and went on to obtain his MA from Lehigh University.  He also did additional post graduate work at Lehigh and Penn State Universities. In 1947, he began his career in education at Nazareth School District.  He started as a junior high school teacher, progressing to the first guidance counselor position, and later principal for the Floyd R. Shafer Elementary School.  He remained at the school district for 35 years.  Post retirement, he joined the Department of Education staff at Lafayette College and also worked for the Pen Argyl School District as a high school substitute teacher. In addition to his education career, he spent over 50 years as a musician.  He formed his own musical group, Will Brown Trio, in addition to playing with his Father’s band, The Ken Brown Orchestra.  They worked at numerous resorts throughout the Slate Belt and Pocono areas.  He served as Secretary and Treasurer for the American Federation of Musicians.  He was instrumental in negotiating a contract for Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, to replace the Gary Moore show on Channel 6.  As Secretary and Treasurer of the organization for 9 years, he was sent as delegate to multiple National Conventions.He was a member of the Pen Argyl Borough Council, serving as Vice President for 4 years.  As a member of AARP, he and his wife served meals on wheels.  He was a lifelong member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, Pen Argyl, serving as Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, member of board of deacons and member of the Session and Personnel Committee. He was also a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, National Association of Elementary Principals, the Bangor Elks and Glen Brook Country Club. He was an avid golfer, loved jazz and big band era music.  He also enjoyed being a musician/drummer and traveling with his wife throughout Europe, Canada, and especially frequent trips to Bermuda.  He was a passionate pet lover and adored his cat Shorty.  He got many of hours of enjoyment from the outdoors, sports, gardening and spending time at his summer home near Blue Mountain. He is survived by a son Tom Brown, (Stacy Singer) of New Milford, CT, a daughter Tammy of Kunkletown, two granddaughters, Alison Brown and Kim (Mario Abreu), and five great grandchildren, Jordan, Faith, Alexa, Stephanie and Daniela.
